Black Balloon Day: Remembering Lives Lost to Overdose
Every year in the United States, thousands and thousands of people die from alcohol and drug overdose. In 2023 alone, more than 105,000 overdose deaths occurred. The loss and devastation from these deaths is overwhelming and heartbreaking, so on March 6th families and loved ones across the country come together for Black Balloon Day–a day of remembrance for those lost to overdose.
What is Black Ballon Day?
While there has been a slight decline in overdose deaths in recent years, drug overdose still stands as the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. Black Balloon Day provides an opportunity to take time to honor those we’ve lost, raise awareness for harm reduction, and offer support to those affected by substance use disorder.
When Did Black Ballon Day Start?
The heartbreak of a family’s loss led to the creation of Black Balloon Day. Two women who lost their son-in-law and brother-in-law to overdose struggled with his tragic passing, and this sparked the creation of this meaningful day of remembrance.
Honoring Those We’ve Lost
While overdose remains the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S., we have the power to make a difference. Black Balloon Day offers us a day that serves as both a tribute to those we’ve lost and a call to action, shining a spotlight on the ongoing overdose crisis and the urgent need for expanded prevention, harm reduction, and recovery resources.
Take time on March 6th to honor loved ones who have been lost and work to help those who are still struggling. By sharing our stories and connecting as a community, we can help break the stigma surrounding addiction and work toward meaningful change.
