New programs affirm loved ones’ key role in recovery from addiction

Continuum of Care Expands for Families

Oxford Treatment Center is broadening its offerings for family members, applying the same Continuum of Care model it uses for the effective treatment of drug and alcohol addiction.

Beginning March 31, the Oxford Outpatient Office will be hosting a new weekly gathering for family members. “Family Hope & Healing: A Journey of Recovery” is free to attend and is open to anyone who has had or who currently has a loved one in active addiction.

Meanwhile, the Oxford Outpatient Office has also begun implementing a new program for families of patients in Oxford Treatment Center’s Sober Living program. The offering includes at least three sessions with a therapist for family members during their loved one’s 60-day stay in Sober Living.

At Oxford Treatment Center:

we share a conviction about the importance of family members and significant others in the recovery process, said Dee Meux, Family Program Coordinator.

“These new offerings will provide even more education and support for family members as they encourage their loved one in recovery and begin the healing process themselves.”

The Tuesday evening Family Hope & Healing gatherings will complement Oxford Treatment Center’s two-day Intensive Family Therapy Program, which loved ones attend at the conclusion of a patient’s time in residential treatment. The meetings will take place each Tuesday at 6 p.m.

“This new gathering will offer a way for family members to get involved even earlier,” Meux said. “It will be a time to encourage each other through shared experience and see how hope can shine through.”

Areas of interest for the meetings will include family dynamics, managing addiction as a chronic disease, and dealing with its effects on the family. Issues faced by Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA) will also be a topic.

As patients complete residential treatment and enter Oxford Treatment Center’s sober living program, additional therapy sessions for family members equip them to better support their loved one when they regain independence.

“As patients prepare to reenter society, their loved ones are able to understand the challenges they’ll face,” said Kelly Ferguson, Clinical Outpatient Therapist. “Family members who are involved in recovery can reinforce everything that a patient has learned during treatment and bolster their hope for lasting recovery.”
